Mustafa Briggs: Due to the Global Pandemic, I’ve decided to preview my latest lecture online, and I know this is one a lot of people have been waiting for.
Most people are surprised when they find out that the founder of the oldest university in the world was an African Muslim Woman, and although she was the first, she certainly was not the last. There is an often unrecognised and understudied tradition of female scholarship that exists within the Islamic tradition and especially on the African continent.
In this lecture, I will explore the tradition of female scholarship within Islam, and how its manifestation in Africa led to a tradition of female leaders whose accomplishments have not been limited to the religious sphere, but have instead made these women respected community leaders and social activists who form the backbone of their societies in a significant way. This is a refreshing alternative to the commonly narrated stereotypes attributed to Muslim women in traditional societies, and serves as an inspiring blueprint for Muslim communities the world over.
