“Our Ratib is like an iron wall for every city in which it is recited.” — Imam al-Haddad
Join us for a monthly gathering reciting the Ratib of Imam al-Haddad, with reciters live from Tareem and various locations around the world. The recitation will be accompanied by commentary in English by Malaysian scholar Sayyid Muhiyuddin al-Attas, based on the book by Habib Alawi b. Ahmad b. Hassan b. Imam Abdullah al-Haddad.
What is the Ratib al-Haddad?
A ‘ratib’ or a ‘wird’, is a litany comprised of verses from the Qur’an, supplications of the Prophet ﷺ, as well as other prayers, salawat and invocations. There are numerous litanies, commonly recited daily around the world that were collated by notable figures, particularly those known for their spiritual proficiency.
A ratib can be likened to a curated set of dhikr formulations, affirmations and invocations; the curator knows which to include, the effect it has, the frequency with which to recite it, and the benefits of doing so – both spiritual and material.
The Ratib al-Haddad (also known as Al-Ratib al-Shahir, the Famous Litany) was collated by the great scholar and saint of the 17th century, Imam ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Alawi al-Haddad, from Tareem, Yemen. It is usually recited in the evening.
It is said that Imam al-Haddad received the litany through divine inspiration, during the 27th night of Ramadan. There are numerous benefits in reciting the Ratib, both in a spiritual sense and a worldly one. It is said to protect the household in which it has been recited, as well as the surrounding vicinity.
Reciting these litanies as part of daily life is crucial, particularly in times of trial and tribulation. Along with protection from material and spiritual harm, reciting Qur’anic and prophetic invocations is said to bring the reciter baraka in their life, as well as spiritual assistance.
