Sacred Footsteps is devoted to the pluralistic intellectual and cultural traditions of Islam.
Through our publication, podcast and classes, we promote a view of the world that is unequivocally rooted in tawhid in a time that is increasingly marked by secularisation.
Our Purpose
For more than a decade, Sacred Footsteps has published articles and essays, travel narratives and guides that reflect the myriad of ways in which Islam has found its expression around the world, as well as the depth of the Islamic intellectual traditions that once raised and nourished illumined civilisations.
We present commentary on the effects of colonialism that all but eradicated Islamic institutions and knowledge frameworks, and explore ideas on how intellectual thought can be revived in our own post-colonial age, and decolonisation be rooted within an Islamic framework.
The Islamic intellectual tradition understood meaning to be found in the ‘signs’ of God, and understanding to take place in the soul of the knowing subject, while knowledge itself was gleaned through Revelation, reason and spiritual unveiling.
We invite readers to consider what restoring Islamic understandings of knowledge and its purpose would look like in our time, and ask:
- What are the outcomes of engaging with the world through a God-centric lens?
- What is an Islamic or Qur’anic worldview?
- What does it mean to live within an Islamic paradigm?
- How can we learn from history and notable figures of the past?
- What would true liberation for this Ummah look like, and how can it be realised?
- How does one walk in the sacred footsteps of the Beloved of God? ﷺ
- What does moving upon the earth with God consciousness look like?
- How can we, individually, contribute towards a movement of tajdid, revival?
