This seminar dives into the rich tradition of Islamic historiography, examining how Muslim scholars recorded, preserved, and interpreted historical events. Using primary Islamic sources such as the Quran, Hadith, Sirah literature, and works of early historians like al-Tabari, al-Waqidi, al-Baladhuri and Ibn Khaldun, students will explore the methodologies, themes, and purposes of Islamic historical writing from an Islamic perspective. By comparing Islamic historiographical approaches with other traditions, this course provides insight into the unique ways Muslims have understood history, time, and their role within it.

Every era comes with its own challenges, its own trials. Like the ebb and flow of the tide, history has proven to us that, inevitably, the ink will dry on a chapter of time, and another will begin.

But this cannot happen before notable individuals, with hearts firmly rooted in Prophetic principles, forged in times of hardship, rise up to meet those challenges.

The ones with the loyalty of Abu Bakr, the steadfastness of Umar, the humility of Uthman, and the courage of Ali.

Our tradition is replete with these individuals; men who led revolutions by raising armies against the odds; women who led revolutions by raising hearts under the cover of night;

those who brandished swords against the oppressors, and those whose words burnished the hearts of the people;

Warriors who resisted occupiers and beacons whose light guided the way.

Those who fought, resisted, restored, revived and liberated. These are the luminaries of our tradition - warriors of justice, and revivers of faith.

🌙 Rajab, the seventh month of the lunar year, is one of the four sacred months of the Hijri calendar, during which fighting is prohibited and acts of worship carry more weight.

⭐️ 13th Rajab marks the birth date of Imam Ali (ra).

⭐️ 27th Rajab is thought to be the date on which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ underwent his Night Journey, Isra’ wal Miraj, to Al Quds, where he ascended to the heavens and was gifted the five obligatory prayers.

⭐️ In Rajab 9AH, a military expedition to Tabuk took place, that saw the largest army ever assembled by the Prophet ﷺ. They marched to Tabuk to face the Byzantines, who had threatened to attack Madina. Ultimately, the Byzantines withdrew so no fighting took place, though the Muslims were able to demonstrate their strength in numbers.

⭐️ It was also during Rajab, in 1187, that Salahuddin al-Ayyubi liberated Jerusalem from the occupation of the Crusaders. After a siege of the city that lasted weeks, Salahuddin’s army finally breached the city walls.

In a striking contrast to the Crusaders, who had entered the city by force eight decades earlier - killing Jews, Muslims and Christians indiscriminately - Salahuddin offered its inhabitants the choice to surrender, promising their security in exchange for paying a small ransom. They accepted.
