Street Iftar in Cape Town

This historic street iftar took place on Bree Street in Cape Town, an area that since the late 1700’s, had been home to a diverse community of people, including Muslims, particularly of enslaved backgrounds.

During the Apartheid era, in the 1960’s they were forcibly removed from the area, despite having lived there for many generations.

That was also the last time a collective of Muslims intentionally held iftaar in their homes on Bree Street. Now 60 years later, their legacy was commemorated, as people gathered to break their fasts as a community once again.
