In this influential and prescient book written four decades ago, Professor Sayid Naquib al-Attas outlined some of the fundamental problems facing Muslims of our time. He begins by dissecting the underlying philosophies of the Western world, and analysing the process of secularisation that has led to what he terms the ‘terrestrialisation’ of man.

Prof. al-Attas then looks for solutions to these contemporary problems from within an Islamic framework, arguing for a ‘de-westernisation’ or ‘Islamisation’ (a term that would be later hijacked and misused by others for political and ideological ends) of knowledge.

One of the most pertinent (of which there are many) sections of the book deals with the concept of justice as a state of being within man himself. Justice to one’s self is an affirmation and fulfilment of the soul’s Covenant with God. By first ensuring this relationship with the self is harmonious and ‘just’, only then can justice extend in a relational manner between him/herself and another and with society at large.

The Green Medina

Fes medina, with its thousand year walls, is like a bubble away from the world. Within the medina, its two biggest mosques are like poles towards which every path leads. On every corner you find the tombs of scholars and saints, and the rooms in which they wrote, studied and taught. Behind the most innocuous gates, you find gardens with fruit trees, among the tombs of those whose books we still read and learn from today. On the hillside overlooking the medina, are the white graves of its past inhabitants, visible from every rooftop in the city.

Fes is replete with crumbling minarets and maqams covered with layers of dust - but they remind you of something; its decaying walls and grave stones are a reminder that we too will pass on from this world, like those who came before us. But do not misunderstand; this is not the city of the dead, but the city of the living.

This is a city of great women and men who left legacies and created movements that extended far beyond the walls of the medina. Of women who established mosques and madrasas; of a woman whose deeds led to the founding of the world’s first university; of men who desired nothing from life except to see the Messenger of God ﷺ with their own eyes; of those who founded tariqahs that reached every corner of the world, and whose tombs still attract thousands to this day.

Fes is a city with a legacy that still lives on, with monuments that, though dusty and worn with time, still exist. No, this is not Mecca or Madina, no where is. But this living, breathing city, replete with the tombs and graves of saints and scholars of the past, is a reminder that our lives will end, but our deeds will live on | 📝 @zara_choudhary

📖 Study the formation of Islamic art from the pre-Islamic - Umayyad period to the Ottomans, Safavids and Mughals

AND

🎨 Create their own artwork through guided pattern and motif construction and sketchbook prompts.

All classes will be taught using an object based method and will investigate the cultural heritage and material culture of the Gunpowder Empires.
